Lauren Barwick Delivers Sixth for Canada in Individual Freestyle at Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games
Tokyo, JPN, Aug. 31, 2021 – Lauren Barwick of Aldergrove, BC, and Sandrino (sired by Spirit of Westfalia) lit up Baji Koen Equestrian Park with a lively Individual Freestyle Test on Aug. 30, 2021, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games in Japan.
Barwick, 43, and Lee Garrod’s nine-year-old Westphalian gelding originally missed the top-eight Freestyle cut off by the narrowest of margins in the Grade III Individual Test on August 27. However, a withdrawal by Rix Van der Horst and Findsley of the Netherlands during the horse inspection the morning of the competition suddenly bumped the Canadian combination back into action. continue

Lauren Barwick and Sandrino Knock It Out of the Park at Tryon Fall Dressage 3 CPEDI 3*
Riding Sandrino (Spirit of Westfalia x Pavarotti), Barwick lit up the CPEDI 3* Grade III leaderboard starting on Oct. 23 in the Team Test with a score of 72.451% for third place. She and the eight-year-old Westphalian gelding continued to wow the judges the next day in the Individual Championship to the tune of 73.039% for second. Not ones to rest on their laurels, Barwick and Sandrino returned to the ring on Oct. 25 for the Freestyle, once again securing second with a new personal best for the pair of 75.978%. continue

In May 2014 Canadian para-equestrian dressage rider Lauren Barwick, gold and silver medalist at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, was ranked by the Federation Equestre International (FEI) as the number one para-equestrian rider in the world. She topped the standings at a score of 1264 and remained in that position for eight weeks. The rankings are consistently compiled on a monthly basis and that year included results from January 1, 2014. continue
